Me and my Wii

So I did wait in those famous Tokyo lines, and got myself a Wii. I'll probably save the actual getting of my Wii for a blog entry, but I have had it for about 2 and a half weeks now. Enough to know which games I love, and what I love about it. The games I bought:

Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess
Elebits
Wii Sports
Necro-Nesia

Easily the best of the bunch is Zelda. It goes without saying that this is the absolute best zelda game since Zelda 2 (I remember Nate C and I playing that for hours on end) and also has a great story. The controls, especially for a launch title, are absolutel perfectly matched with the remote and nunchuck. Although it was a bit strange at first, it becomes completely organic, and second nature after playing a while. Without trying to spoil anything, my some of my favorite things about it, is the fact that you can fight while on horse back. Second is easily the backgrounds. I feel like I am watching Lord of the Rings, it is so expansive and beautiful. One thing I don't like is that it could still stand to be a bit more adult and dark. It is still somewhat cartoony in some ways, although I guess that can't be helped. Another is the similar bosses to Wind Waker. Although I loved that, I can't stop thinking of those cartoony unscary bosses in the Game Cube title when I fight them.
A huge surprise is Elebits. It is a fairly simple game where you have to capture tiny creatures who steal electricity. It also features a fantastic movement system that takes advantage of the Wii controls very well. You even twist the remote to open doornobs and cabinets. It is incredibly fun, and addictive like Tetris.
The biggest loser of the bunch is Necro-Nesia, a survival horror game that takes place on an island of giant insects and mutant animals. Although it is moody and creepy (the flashlight and music adds to this), the controls are so horrible as to be almost unplayable. It is easier to just swing your bladed and bashing weapons willy nilly and hope an enemy wanders into them than actually trying to aim for enemies. The character is so slow that most damage often comes from not being able to maneuver out of the way of enemies that are a hundred times more nimble and fast that you are. It seems like an incredibly rushed title, and not worth the buy, and probably not the cost of a rental either.
Wii sports is fun with other people, but not all that exciting on your own unless you're playing golf.
No matter what the game though, I can see myself picking up new Wii titles instead of spending the money on a PS3 for a while to come. Until Resident Evil 5 comes out for the PS3 that is, and then I will have a dilemma...

@Resonance

I stole your image as my avatar. During these times I habitually become reflective. I think partly because the Fall symbolizes death. Trees begin to change color signally Winter or the end of a seasonal cycle. This time of year also has me recalling specific CDs that seem to form a cohesion with my mood. So I've decided to pull together a short list of albums that have made it to my player. Here goes (no particular order) :

Radiohead, Amnesiac
John Coltrane, A love supreme
Mars Volta, Frances the Mute
Bjork, Post & Homogenic
Ghost in the Shell, TV series soundtrack (season one)
Smashing Pumpkins, Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness

What are your picks (seasonally driven or not)?

I watched the news this morning and was very glad that I decided to wait to get my PS3 (at least until the price lowers a bit). The lines were in the thousands, and people were standing in the rain from 7am. It sold out completely in under two hours. It was a big media circus with cute PS3 girls from sony in these cool black mini skirt space suit things (come to think of it, the girls that work in the Sony building in Ginza also wear silver mini skirt space suit things. Think the guys from Sony have something for mini skirts...). What bothers me about this is that the Wii comes out in three weeks here, and I will probably have to line up before dawn if I want one. With all the other nerds.

Wait, what just happened?

I was browsing around digg and came across a great post about a kid that was trying to social engineer his way to someones Steam account via a chat client. The result is completely hilarious. Give it a look:

I become more interested in it the more I hear about it.

The secret is in the controller. Nintendo has always been on the forefront of controller innovation. I think they've really hit it off this time.

I'm buying a Wii.

Here's a vid with mostly North American releasing games:

There's a lot more games in this vid, but they're mostly Japanese. Did you know that you could cut a cucumber with your wiimote? >.>

There's a lot of things in that video about BR that are very interesting. :)

Finally a cyberpunk-ish type imaginitive sci-fi series. Unfortunately, this is something that probably could never happen in the states, because the only sci-fi series are crappy defuncts with horrible scripts and budgets on the Sci-Fi channel. Anyway, I will be recording all of the episodes on my Sony digital recorder and burning them to DVD. If you guys ever come here, or get a region free player, you will be welcome to watch them. It looks GOOD!

But since she hasn't bought a PSP yet she lent it to me until she does. I wasn't in the mood for an RPG but it is great. Totally reminds me of Super Nintendo RPGs like Illusion of Gaia and the old Act Raiser. Not all that cinematic or anything like that, but a great blast from the past feeling.
